Summer 2014 Chess Camp Registration

Rainbow Elementary will be the location for four different Summer Chess Camp opportunities for kids in grades K-8!  The fee for each camp is $75.  The camps will be taught by Bill Nash, the competition chess coach for the Rainbow Chess Team and Noel Newquist, the Madison Elementary & Rainbow Chess Club coach/sponsor.  The camps will occur Wednesday through Friday July 16-18th and is open to any student (public, private, or home school) entering grades K-8.

In the morning, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 16-18th, we will offer a Learn To Play Chess camp which will teach basics on how pieces move, point values, and rules.  It is designed for students who want to learn how to play and join school chess clubs.

Also in the morning, from 8:30-11:30 a.m., we will offer a Beginner Competition Chess Camp, which is designed for players who have competed in USCF chess tournaments with a rating below 600.  USCF registration # is required.

In the afternoon, from 1-4 p.m. we will offer a Recreation Chess Camp, for kids who want to play chess for fun.  Those who attended last summer’s chess camps at Rainbow Elementary will build on what was learned last year.  If your child has not competed in a USCF rated tournament or has not yet received a rating, but wants to improve in chess, this would be the camp to attend.

In the afternoon Madison City Schools will also offer Intermediate Competition Chess Camp from 1-4 p.m. for kids who compete regularly in chess tournaments.  A United States Chess Federation (USCF) minimum rating of 600 or above is required.

You will want to pack a snack and drink for those attending camp.

If you have questions about which camp to register for, contact Ranae Bartlett at rbartlett@madisoncity.k12.al.us.  Your child’s reservation will be secured in the order payment and registration forms are received.

At the end of the summer camps on Saturday July 19th, Rainbow Elementary will host the first annual Summer Knights Chess Tournament for students K-12.  There will be both rated and non-rated sections!  This will be a great first tournament for your kids to try if they have not played competitive chess before.

Registration forms for both the Summer Knights Chess Camp and Tournament are available on the Rainbow Elementary webpage.
